S&OP of Horror: The Nightmare Before Month-End

Publicado originalmente en inglés.
Supply Chain is full of horror stories… But nothing is scarier than an S&OP meeting where everyone has a different plan… AND NOBODY MAKES A DECISION! 😱
👻 THE FORECAST GHOST
Sales forecasted 100,000 units. Actual demand? Only 60,000. 40,000 mysteriously disappeared from the market… BUT NOT FROM INVENTORY!
🧟 THE ZOMBIE INVENTORY
Products that haven't moved in months. Nobody buys them. Nobody needs them. Yet every month-end, they return to haunt working capital.
🧛 THE CASH FLOW VAMPIRE
Draining the company's liquidity. Its favorite meals? Excess inventory, unnecessary purchases, and obsolete stock.
🐺 THE PRODUCTION WEREWOLF
During S&OP, everything is under control. But when the month-end full moon rises… PRODUCTION PRIORITIES CHANGE WITHOUT WARNING! 🌕
🧙♀️ THE PROMOTION WITCH
A promotion launched without checking inventory, capacity, or supply constraints. Result? Great expectations… and a service nightmare!
💀 THE KPI SKELETON
Sales achieved its targets. Production maximized efficiency. Purchasing secured volume discounts. Finance pushed for lower inventory. But somehow… THE COMPANY IS LOSING MONEY!
🩸 The Bleeding P&L
| KPI | Change |
|---|---|
| Net Sales | -25% |
| Inventory Carrying Costs | +40% |
| Expedite Costs | +60% |
| Operating Profit | -35% |
Illustrative figures, real business risks. Everyone optimized their KPIs. NOBODY OPTIMIZED THE BUSINESS.
😈 THE LAST-MINUTE EXECUTIVE appears five minutes before month-end: "I WANT 100% SERVICE, ZERO INVENTORY, MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY, AND LOWER COSTS… BY TOMORROW!"
☠️ The scariest monster in S&OP?
Not an inaccurate forecast. Not a supplier delay. Not even a production breakdown. IT'S AN ORGANIZATION WITHOUT ALIGNMENT OR DECISIONS.
💡 Effective S&OP doesn't mean everyone gets what they want. It means understanding trade-offs, making cross-functional decisions, aligning priorities, and executing ONE SHARED PLAN.
